SMAART Gallery & Studio is pleased to present Neo Cali Clay, a group show that features a collection of figurative and representational ceramic artists working today in California.  The artists in this show are united in their use of imagery to establish a dialogue that considers both the internal and external social issues of today.  Utilizing a variety of references that are considerably personal and yet culturally relevant, even as they often stretch to the fantastic, these artists are committed to the medium of clay as the fundamental vehicle for their unique and modern expressions.  With bold and dramatic visual imagery, bright surfaces, and significant social commentary, these artists have established a voice in the next movement of contemporary ceramics:  Neo Cali Clay.

SMAart Gallery & Studio is pleased to present the third annual group exhibit curated by artist/curator Maggie Malloy.

Curator’s Statement: Making art is chancy; it doesn’t mix well with predictability.  Uncertainty and risk-taking for the artist is the essential, inevitable companion to desire in making art. ‘Making’; is a process that tells the artist what they are thinking, hearing, and having it make sense. It is a process of constantly going back & forth, doubting and testing. Doubt is a form of intelligence. It becomes feedback of the vision. What the artist know about their current work is contained in the last work. Fingerprints are all over the work and trace the willingness to embrace the obstacle of uncertainties. The chancy act of prolonged engagement often becomes the artist’s statement.

On The Edge

Artists: Lizzie Helbig, Evan Hobart, Anthony Magnetti, Nick Schwartz, Hannah Meredith, Mark Jaeger, Jessica Thompson and Suzanne Lussier

Curator: Evan Hobart

On the Edge surveys the work of 8 ceramic artists created during the last eight months while working at the Mendocino Art Center and Flynn Creek Potteries. They came from all over the country in September, 2013, and a synergy soon formed with a melding of ideas, new
techniques and innovative spirit that has helped these artists take their work to the edge of creative expression. Each artist brought their own unique perspective and a focal range from content and narrative to form and firing techniques.

On the Edge is an up close observation of their best works created while at the Mendocino Art Center in conjunction with Flynn Creek Potteries.  This show seeks to explore the interweaving of the artists ideas, techniques and art works as they share a common experience and become part of a California’s rich ceramic legacy.

Exhibition May 130, 2014
Opening Reception: Thursday May 1st, 6-9pm

Cosmic Compulsions and Animated Animals

Artists: Paula Wenzl Bellacera & Joseph Bellacera
Paula and Joe admired each other’s artwork even before they met. At that time
both were showing landscapes. As a couple, their work has matured, and has
followed different paths. Paula fell for the plasticity of the ceramic. Her
sculptures express whimsical human emotion and personalities embodied in
the form of animals. Joe broadened his interests to create a synthesis of
elements from the most mundane to the most elegant configurations of the
macro and micro. These varied arrangements have become what he calls
“visual poems.”
